This winter and spring, we had the opportunity to host an intern from Rhode Island College. Iliany Garcia is completing her degree in Early Childhood Education at Rhode Island College, and she selected Reach Out and Read RI for her Community Programs Internship. Iliany came to us with a depth of experience in early literacy. In addition to finishing her degree, she is working as a kindergarten teacher in a bilingual classroom in a Providence school. Originally from the Dominican Republic, she is a native Spanish speaker and has a passion for bringing families together around books and language, a mission that is close our hearts.
During her time with us, Iliany helped to plan community events including two at the Providence Children’s Museum. She guided us in selecting Spanish and bilingual books for our collection. For her final project, she created materials to share with our RORRI providers focused on supporting families in preserving native languages.
We are grateful that Iliany chose to spend time with RORRI. Over the past few months, we were inspired by her enthusiasm, dedication and perseverance. We are proud of her accomplishments, and we can’t wait to see where she goes! Thank you, Iliany! ¡Gracias y felicitaciones!
