How do you make reading a part of a daily routine when your little one is always on the move? When we picture reading to children, we might picture our little ones snuggled in our lap quietly listening to the soothing sound of our voice, but we all know life with toddlers is hardly quiet. Their brains and bodies are developing rapidly, and they are constantly seeking out new information, practicing new skills and testing the boundaries in their most trusted relationships. It’s a time when those caring for them must get creative about fitting in shared reading time. Here are a few tips for reading to a toddler who is always on the go.
- Make a reading routine at the beginning and end of your day. Toddlers crave routines. When their minds and bodies know what to expect, it helps them feel safe and calm.
- Select books that are short and engaging. Rhythmic and rhyming text can keep children engaged even when they aren’t sitting on your lap.
- Let your toddler be a part of the story. Point out something in the book that is familiar to them. This helps them build the connections between their own world and the worlds within the pages.
- Be flexible and follow their lead. One minute they are engaged in a book, and the next they are off and running. That’s OK! Keep reading as part of a daily routine, and with time, it could become their favorite part of the day.
