The Reach Out and Read Rhode Island Spring Breakfast brings together community leaders, healthcare partners, and supporters to celebrate the power of reading aloud in shaping young children’s lives.
Join us for an inspiring morning featuring keynote speaker Kari Kurto and guest reader Oge Mora, as we highlight how early literacy builds strong families, healthy development, and brighter futures for Rhode Island’s children.
Keynote Speaker - Kari Kurto
Kari Kurto is the National Director of Policy and Partnerships at The Reading League. She directs all work related to The Reading League Compass, the Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines, the Curriculum Navigation Reports, and Educator Preparation Program Partnerships. She also leads work to support English Learners and Emergent Bilingual students and runs several communities of practice. Kari is a member of the Path Forward advisory group and has presented at numerous conferences and for multiple organizations. She works as an adjunct professor at Rhode Island College and formerly served as a Literacy Specialist at the Rhode Island Department of Education, where she led statewide efforts to implement the Rhode Island Right to Read Act. Kari is an Orton-Gillingham practitioner who worked at Middlebridge School in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and Rawson Saunders School in Austin, Texas. Before her career in education, Kari worked as a Casting Director in Los Angeles. She and her three wonderful children live in southern Rhode Island.
Special Guest Reader - Oge Mora
Oge Mora is a collage artist and storyteller. Her picture book, Thank You, Omu!, was a Caldecott Honor, Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award winner, and Ezra Jack Keats Book Award recipient. Her second book, Saturday won the 2020 Boston Globe—Horn Book Picture Book Award. Oge’s artwork has been applauded by The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Boston Globe. She is also a 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 Lister in Arts & Style.
Oge grew up in Columbus, Ohio but resides in Providence, RI. She is a fan of all things colorful, patterned, or collaged, and enjoys creating warm stories that celebrate people coming together.
